Since there has been a lot of confusion about the Bosch air mass meters 0 928 400 527 ( and 0928400468) and 0 928 400 314, I want to explain the details.
For almost all BMW models with diesel engines (to be more exact, we’re talking about the 3-series/E46 320d, 330d, the 5-series/E39 520d, 525d, 530d [...]

Since there has been a lot of confusion about the Bosch air mass meters 0 928 400 527 ( and 0928400468) and 0 928 400 314, I want to explain the details.
For almost all BMW models with diesel engines (to be more exact, we’re talking about the 3-series/E46 320d, 330d, the 5-series/E39 520d, 525d, 530d and the 7-series E38 730d) the airflowmeter model was changed in November 2000 and August 2001.

The Bosch air mass meter 0928400314 was replaced by the improved 0928400468, which has an additional protection net and a different characteristic curve. This means that all models that were built before the dates have the old 0928400314 (there is a detailed list at the end of the post).

Why was the old air mass meter changed anyways?

The Bosch 0928400314 had a lot of problems: The airflow sensor got dirty very easily. So, as I already mentioned, an additional, closer grid was added (can be seen in the picture). The electronic was optimized, which is why the ECU has to be re-programmed or re-coded when the 0928400468 replaces the 0928400314.

After the 0 928 400 468 was introduced, Bosch stopped producing the 0928 400 314, because of course they weren’t interested in producing a “constructional defect” any longer. So, if you have the 0928400314 you HAVE to replace it with the 0928400468 airflowmeter and get the re-programming done.

There are still manufacturers which produce replicas of the 0928400314, for example Löwe Automobil with the BM314 which costs around €120 plus shipping. However, it should be noted, that Bosch didn’t replace the 0928 400 314 just for fun, so I’d always recommend to spend the extra cash, get the ECU recoded and order the improved 0928400468.
Note: Only an official BMW dealership can recode or re-program your ECU.

Where can I buy the 0928400468?

This leads us to the next confusion. The “0 928 400 468″ is the number for all the airflow meters that were installed in the BMW factory. The “0 928 400 527” is the trade version of the 0928400468.

So, the Bosch airmassmeter 0928400527 is identical to the 0928400468. It is only a Bosch-internal numbering difference.

You can buy the Bosch part as well as a replica by Löwe Automobile at the MAF-Shop:

Original Bosch MAF 0928 400 527 / 0928 400 468 for €189.90 (£141.88 / 280 USD)

or

Replica Löwe Automobil MAF 0928 400 527 / 0928 400 468 for €119.90 (£89.50 / 177 USD)

or you get the replica of the old version:

Replica Löwe Automobil MAF 0928 400 314 for €119.90 (£89.50 / 177 USD)

All these prices include the German VAT, so if you get them shipped outside the EU you can take off another 19%!

Does your car have the new or the old airmassmeter?

Again, something that makes the whole thing even more confusing, the airmassmeter model change was at two different times (ask Bosch why – not me).

The following BMW diesel models had the new 0928400468 / 0928400527 airflowmeter installed by November, 2000:

E46 320d (also Touring); built since 04/1998

E39 520d (also Touring); built since 04/1998

The following BMW diesel models had the new 0928400468 / 0928400527 airflowmeter installed by August, 2001:

E46 318d (also Touring)

E46 330d (also Touring); built since 10/1999

E46 330xd (also Touring); built since 07/2000

E39 525d (also Touring); built since 04/2000

E39 530d (also Touring); built since 08/1998

E38 730d; built since 08/1998

The best way though is to check the currently installed airmassmeters, especially if you got the car as a second hand, since the old owner could have already had a change and reprogramming done.

Also, sometimes cars are only registered a few months after they have been produced, so even though your Bimmer is supposed to have the new MAF according to the list, it has built in the old one.

These are the original BMW numbers: 13622247074, 13627787076, 13712247002 or in the BMW writing style 13 62 22 47 074, 13 62 77 87 076, 13 71 22 47 002.

Of course, this is still not confusing enough, that’s why there is another MAF: In case your Beemer diesel already has EU4 also known as D4 you need the Bosch air mass meter 0928400529 / 0 928 400 529 (original BMW number: 13627788744), which is a little pricier at €229.90.

Yes, I know it’s still pretty complicated. I’m happy to help you out if you post your car details in the comment section. Also, the guys from the MAF-Shop offer a very quick and good customer service.
