A few years ago some Volkswagen freaks experimented with replacing the Bosch air mass meter of their 1.9 liter TDI engine with the much cheaper Pierburg air mass sensor 7.22684.07.0, which is the Genuine air mass meter for almost all Mercedes-Benz CDI’s and noticed that the engine worked just as fine as it did with the Bosch MAF. Another advantage than the Pierburg airflow sensor being much cheaper was that it lasted much longer.
The only problem that the VW enthusiasts encountered was that the Pierburg air mass sensor 72268407 didn’t really fit because the plastic housing was a bit different to the original air mass meter. Why should the cleaning process work anyhow? The most common reason air mass meters lose their performance or even stop working at all is that they slowly get dirty. That is also why most of the time you will notice a slow loss of performance and increase in fuel consumption (In case your airflow meter should abruptly stop working cleaning won’t help anyways).
